FAQs

Why do you need me?

We need a representative sample of individuals in Great Britain to truly reflect the travel patterns of the country as a whole.

What do I get?

When the interviewer picks up the device and your questionnaire upon completion of the survey you should provide an email address, an e-voucher code worth £20 will be sent to that email address within 5 working days.

If no email address is available and you choose a £20 high street giftcard as a thank you for taking part, it will be despatched within 5 working days. Please allow for potential Royal Mail delays.

Is it confidential?

YES! Ipsos is a company partner of the Market Research Society (MRS) and works according to their rules of conduct laid down to protect the interests of the public. We also adhere to the rules and regulations associated with data protection and information security. Any data collected will be used for research purposes only and there will be no reference to your personal details, which will remain anonymous. More information can be found in your copy of the Ipsos Thank You leaflet.

All the data that you provide is covered by GDPR and data protection, please refer to the provided privacy policy for more information.

We will use your contact details to call you after you have carried the device for a few days just to make sure everything is OK, but these will not be used later on when creating a model of travel patterns from the data collected.

Will I have to change my travel habits?

We do not want the carrying of the device to influence how you travel in any way. Go about your day as you normally would.

What if I am only popping out quickly?

We need to know about all the travelling that is done no matter how long or short, on foot or using another mode of transport, to ensure the data we collect is accurate and complete.

What if I forget to take the device out with me?

Ideally, we want you to carry the device with you at all times (including weekends) but if you do forget just remember to pick it up the next time you are at home so you take it with you when you next leave the house. Remember to complete question 1c of your questionnaire ‘Did you have your MobiTest with you at all times?’ so we know you didn’t take it with you.

Try and put the device somewhere visible at all times, possibly by your front door so you see it on your way out or you could keep a post it note on your front door as a reminder. You will need to work out what best works for you as a reminder to take it with you.

Can other members of my family help me carry the device?

NO! As each individual has different travel patterns, it is important that only you, the person who has been selected for this survey, carry the device with you.

What is GPS?

Global-Positioning-System is a system which is able to locate the position via satellite and save it as a geographical coordinate. It is the same technology used in car navigation systems.

What is GPRS?

General-Packet-Radio-Service is a wireless communication service that allows the transmission of data without the need for cables or wires. It is the same technology that allows text messages to be sent from a mobile phone.

Is the MobiTest safe?

The MobiTest device is best compared to a mobile phone or car navigation system so is completely free of radiation and does not create any electromagnetic fields so will not interfere with any other electronic devices. Therefore, people can use it safely if they have a pacemaker and/or are in highly sensitive electromagnetic areas.

How much electricity does the device need to charge?

It’s a small electronic device so uses very little electricity when charging.

How should I treat the MobiTest device?

Please treat the device with care. Do not clean the device using liquid or aerosol cleaners – if necessary, please use an antibacterial wipe. Never push any object of any kind into an opening or attempt to prise apart. And please do not place near extreme heat sources like stoves or radiators.

Do I need to press any buttons on the device?

We have made the task simple so there is never a need to press any buttons. Just remember to carry the device and plug it in at the end of the day.

Does the device track where I am?

This device is not a real-time tracker. Data gets stored using the internal memory chip and only gets sent to us at the end of the day when you plug in the device.

What if I have further questions?

For any questions regarding the MobiTest Travel Survey please call the Helpline Team on the Freephone number 0808 238 5400. They are available to take your calls Monday to Friday 9:30am to 5:30pm. You can also contact them through our contact form.

Whenever you contact the Helpline Team please quote your MobiTest number that can be found on the back of the device – this will help them deal with your query much quicker.

When I sign what am I agreeing to?
  • To carry your MobiTest device with you when you leave the house over the course of the survey period and charge it every night when you return home.
  • To treat your MobiTest device with care and take every effort not to lose or damage it.
  • That the MobiTest device is Ipsos property and you will return it at the end of the survey period.
When will you pick up the MobiTest device, charger and questionnaire?

The interviewer will discuss with you the best time for them to pick these up. However, if anything changes please call the helpline.

If you have any issues or questions, please contact us. Have your device number handy which is located on the back of your device. We aim to respond to queries within 24 hours.
